Tools used

The "Why?"

USCIS is an extremely vital tool for all non-US citizens for obtaining and maintaining Green Card. The site houses all the necessary forms, applications, status updates, and lawful information one would need.

However, the site is cluttered, there’s a surplus of information, and the vernacular is misleading.

By understanding users' needs and perspectives...

How might we improve the current website with the intention of highlighting important functions and preventing disorientation when finding the needed information,

thus creating confidence for users who are intending to apply US immigration status?

User Needs

We conducted interviews with 5 users who have used the website before and/or currently using visit the website as an applicant.

Some of our interviewees speak English as a second language. When there are some terms or information they don't understand, they often refer to sources outside of the USCIS website - whether it is asking someone who is familiar with the US Immigration Laws, or search engines.
Even though all informations should be available in the website,

Users were not able to find the information they needed because informations were buried in links within pages that takes extensive steps to reach the goal, and category names do not match with users' comprehension and logic - causing confusion when users needed to find specific materials.

From there, we conducted a heuristic and Information Architecture evaluation to revise the website structure and interaction points.

Wrap Up

At the end of the presentation, our team received great feedback on our approach for the website information architecture and intentions. We were able to express our users' journey with the website and brought up a possible solution to their concerns.

As we are also in the learning process of UX and UI Design, we learned to reconsider our first approach to our created target user persona as we wanted to approach this to a larger scope of language and nationality. It has been a great learning experience for us to go forward with our journey.
