The "Why?"

Have you considered getting a pet - but are unsure if the pet is the right fit for you or you just can’t because of financial or time availability issues?

This idea sparked during a conversation with a dog lover. She was not able to have pets due to her nomadic work life. She would love the company of another pet, or just have a moment to spend time with an animal companion without the commitment.

She needed her "dog fix".

How might we build a meetup platform for non-pet owners to interact with others' pets..

In order to relive the feel of companionship without the financial burden and time commitment of ownership, at the convenience of each user?

My Role

At the start of this project, I led a team of 3 designers to synthesize problem statements, obtain user insights and usability testing results, and create mobile application prototypes based-on  insights and needs.

After the project was submitted, I developed and designed High Fidelity version of the prototype.

User Interview and Journey

We conducted interviews with 5 users who are currently not owning any pets, or used to have a pet to learn their obstacles to owning the pet. User interviews were conducted via online video meeting platforms and in-person meetings.

We learned that some of the reasons these users are not able to have a pet are because of their current living space, financial situation, and time availability.

Dogs
seem to be the most popular pet type among our interviewees. Thus, we decide to use dogs as our main focus but still include other possible pet options in our prototyping.
We then determine a hypothesis user task flow in onboarding and using the application and translated the diagram into a rough sketch prototype to get direct usability feedback.
We met with 5 different users and tested the initial prototype with them.

They expressed interest in the idea being the first. However, they were struggling to go through the tasks and gaining confidence in using the application.

Feedbacks that we were able to receive includes:

Confusing map function.

Difficult application navigation.

Unclear onboarding questions purpose and search filter function.

The Iteration

Taking these points into consideration, we revised our prototype into Mid Fidelity version.

Wrap Up

At the end of the presentation, our team received positive feedback on the innovation and approach that we took. We were able to articulate our user's dilemma and journey well, and bring the audience into the story.

This project also becomes a learning experience for me on user persona creation, creating an empathic user journey, and safety considerations for meet-up applications.
